Bangladesh Dhaka corrspondent : A local court has sentenced 39 people to death in the sensational Fulgazi upazila parishad chairman Ekramul Haque killing case.
District and Session’s Court Judge Aminul Haque handed down the verdict on Tuesday afternoon.
The court also acquitted 16 other accused, including BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, as the allegation brought against them could not be proved.
Minar was the prime accused in the murder case.
Police submitted the charge sheet against 56 people on August 28, 2014. Of the 56 charged, 55 belong to Awami League or its associated bodies.
On May 20, Ekram, president of Fulgazi upazila unit of Awami League, came under attack by miscreants in front of Bilasi Cinema Hall in the morning on his way to Fulgazi town from his Masterpara residence.
The miscreants intercepted his microbus and opened shots at him from a very close range and then set fire to his vehicle.
They left the scene after confirming Ekram’s death on the spot.
