Bangladesh Dhaka corrspondent :BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is currently in jail in the Zia orphanage trust graft case, has been shown detained in a case filed in Comilla over the arson attack on a bus in Choddogram where 8 people had died.
Justice Md Mostain Billah of Comilla Senior Chief Judicial court passed the order on Sunday after hearing a petition from the state.
On the same day, lawyers of the former prime minister filed for bail in the Comilla arson case. The court will hear the bail petition on Tuesday.
After being sentenced to 5 years’ imprisonment in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case, Khaleda has been imprisoned in the Old Dhaka Central Jail for the last two months.
The High Court had granted bail to the BNP chief in the case, but the Supreme Court Appellate Division stayed it till May 8 upon petitions filed by the state and Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
In order to be freed from prison now, Khaleda also has to acquire bail in the Comilla arson case as well.
Amid the BNP-Jamaat led blockades, a Dhaka bound Icon Transport bus from Cox’s Bazar was attacked with petrol bombs, which left 8 people dead.
SI of Choddogram Police Station, Nuruzzaman Hawlader filed a case over the incident the next day. The BNP chairperson was charged under the explosives act and for murder.
