Aug 21 grenade attack: Babar, Pintu among 19 to die, Tarique gets life term

Probashbangla24 online Desk : A Dhaka court has sentenced former state minister Lutfozzaman Babar, former Deputy Minister for Education Abdus Salam Pintu and 17 others to death in the August 21 grenade attack case.

BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, leader Abul Harris Chowdhury and 15 others, have received life imprisonment in the case.

Judge Shahed Nuruddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 at Old Dhaka’s Nazimuddin Road passed the verdict.on Wednesday.

A grenade attack on an Awami League rally in Dhaka on August 21, 2004 left 24 people, including Ivy Rahman, dead and more than 300 others injured.

The prime target of the attack, the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina, narrowly escaped death but suffered hearing damage.

According to the charge sheet, the attack was planned by a group of influential BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders.

Working with militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami Bangladesh (Huji-B), they had collaborated with a section of senior officials of the Home Ministry, police, Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
